Romans 1:16-17 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”
Paul
begins this verse of scripture by unequivocally stating that he is in no way
ashamed of the gospel of Christ Jesus. He then points out that the gospel is
the power of God that allows the world, irrespective of race, belief, or
national origin, to experience salvation. The reach of salvation is for all
people; the gospel conveys a universal message. The gospel is not
indiscriminate power; it has principle and objective, and it serves the eternal
purpose of God. The gospel message is still just as effective today as in the
first century when Paul wrote these words.
Not
being ashamed of the Gospel means that we are not intimidated by worldly
perspectives. The fear of going against the world’s viewpoints is akin to
retreating at the sight of a scarecrow. If more Christians surrendered
themselves to the power of the Gospel of Christ Jesus, we would have to
construct more and larger church buildings (Acts 4:12). Our righteousness and
the righteousness of God are two entirely different manners of righteousness.
They are not two segments of a general form of righteousness. There is no
manner of righteousness that humans might believe they possess that is adequate
or sufficient in the eyes of God.
The
only way we, as humans, can ever receive God’s righteousness is by placing our
faith and trust, for our salvation, on the substitutionary work of Christ Jesus
on the Cross of Calvary. If we believe that there is some work we can do to
receive it or some work we must do to maintain it, we are sadly mistaken. The
sad aspect of this is that Hell is going to be filled with people who say:
‘Lord, did I not do massive amounts of work in your name? The response from God
will be: depart from me; I never knew you (Matthew 7:21-23).
Basking
in the righteousness of God is our right to life everlasting. The surrendered
follower and believer in Christ Jesus has been freed from their sin because
Jesus paid our sin debt on the Cross. Because Jesus paid our sin debt at His
crucifixion, God will then declare us as righteous in His eyes. This most
precious gift given to us comes through our faith and trust in Christ Jesus,
and not by any works that we see as good and necessary works. (Romans 6:23).
