Luke 24:45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.
The foundational thesis of
this verse begins with two men headed back to their home in Emmaus. They come
upon a stranger on the road who talked to them about the scriptures and opened
their minds. Their hearts began to burn with a passion for God and His will for
their lives. It was not until the stranger left their sight that they understood
this was the risen Christ. These two men returned to Jerusalem and located the
eleven Apostles that gathered together, no doubt in a state of sadness and
disbelief. While they were speaking, Jesus stood in the midst of them. They
were at first terrified and unsure of what they saw; however, Christ Jesus
comforted them and reassured them that although the world thought that He was
dead, he was alive.
At this point, Jesus opened
the minds of all that were present so that they could understand the scriptures.
God accomplished this miracle by the gift of another promise that Jesus had
given them before He went to the Cross of Calvary, the indwelling of the Holy
Spirit (John 20:22). Although their understanding of the scriptures was once
dull (Luke 9:45), they could now see clearly (Psalm 119:18; Isaiah 29:18-19; 2
Corinthians 3:14-16). Until our spiritual eyes and ears open by the indwelling
of the Holy Spirit, we can read the Bible as often and as thoroughly as we
might. Still, we will never truly comprehend the depth of the scriptures
without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
Charles Spurgeon once said:
"Without the Spirit of God, we can do nothing. We are as ships without the
wind, branches without sap, and like coals without fire, we are
useless." Elwood "Woody"
Norris engineered sound waves to travel somewhat like a laser beam for about
150 yards, known as Hyper Sonic Sound (HSS). It would allow some people
standing in a group to hear the sound and others not be able to hear. One would
be unaware of any noise by moving just a few steps away from this tightly
formed path of these HSS sound waves.
The messages God has for us
are somewhat like these unique sound waves. We must be in the right place to
hear what the Holy Spirit is communicating. If we move away from the byway of
the voice of God, we would be unaware that He is sharing with us, and we would
miss an important and life-changing message from our Lord and Savior Christ
Jesus.
To assure that we will always
hear the messages God has for us, we must keep our reflectors clean and clear
of the world's refuse. We have a choice, we can seek after the fame and fortune
of the world, with all of its sensual pleasures, or we can stay tuned in to the
indwelling of the Holy Spirit and have treasures that worldly standards cannot
measure. Eternal treasures that will outlast this lost, dark, and dying world.
