John 5:25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.
This Scripture verse explains
why Father God dedicated all judgment to Jesus, the Son. It involves more than
just Him serving as the Judge of all people (2 Corinthians 5:9). The aspiration
of the Father is that all people honor the Son, just as they honor the Father.
This plea from the Father might be somewhat despicable if the Son were not God
Himself. The scripture (John 5:25-27) refers to spiritual resurrection or
rebirth.
The Apostle John opens this
verse up with a literary double negative, “very truly,” that emphasizes the
statements he is bringing forth. Christ Jesus issues a profound statement,
which was used four (4) times in the Gospel of John, “a time is coming and has
come now” (John 4:21: 23; 5:25; 28). The time spoken of here is the time Jesus
came to the earth in His bodily form. The promise of God (The dead will hear
His voice) is fulfilled in our time here on earth. This promise of God is a
transparent verification that this verse speaks of spiritual regeneration, not
a bodily resurrection.
The phrase “and now has come”
refers to the fact that before we became believers in Christ Jesus, we were
dead in our sins (Ephesians 2:1-6). This phrase also clarifies that Jesus made
eternal life available to all people during His earthly Ministry. He
accomplished the greatest miracle of all time by suffering and dying on the
Cross to atone for our sins. The dead spoken of in this verse are the
spiritually dead, those that are dead in their sins. So, when we were dead in our
sins, we heard and heeded the voice of God, in Christ Jesus, through the Holy
Spirit.
Job asked the question: If
someone dies, will they live again? (Job 14:14). Jesus answers that profound
question in the affirmative. Later, Job answers his own question (Job
19:25-27). Everyone will live forever, some to eternal damnation sentenced at
the “Great White Throne Judgment” (Revelation 20:11-15) and some to everlasting
life with our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. During this time on earth, Jesus
calls all people from spiritual death to spiritual life, which is eternal life.
All who have not accepted Christ Jesus as their Lord and Savior face eternal
separation from God. However, if any lost person would listen, they would hear
the voice of God through the movement of the Holy Spirit calling them to come
to Jesus, the way, the truth, and the life. That is eternal life in heaven with
the one that made it possible for us to be there, Christ Jesus (Ephesians
2:1-5).
