Mark 10:25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
There
are several theories about what Jesus referred to when He spoke of the “eye of
the needle.” The most popular idea is that it was a small gate in the Jerusalem
City Wall that would forbid Camels from entering the city. The difficulty with
this theory is that there is no evidence that such a gate ever existed.
Moreover, why would any rational camel driver attempt to go through a small
gate that he obviously couldn’t navigate when there were gates designed to
allow Camels through? There are several other theories; however, Jesus likely
used hyperbole, a figure of speech used to exaggerate for emphasis, to make his
point.
The
message that Jesus wanted us to take from this is that nobody can receive
salvation through their own efforts. When Jesus was on the earth, the
Jewish leaders believed that being wealthy was a blessing from God for
someone’s good works or deeds. They thought their wealth would get them a place
in God’s eternal kingdom because of their false self-righteousness. Jesus put
that wrong theory to rest, and His disciples were startled and thought, if the
rich, which included the Scribes and Pharisees, could not get to heaven, what
chance would a poor person have?
For
some ultra-wealthy people, it becomes challenging to possess great wealth and
not trust in the gold and silver for everything they need. Some people are
inclined to see their great wealth as idols. Trusting in idols makes us feel
independent, which leads to a false sense of independence from God. We do not
have anything God needs; thus, we cannot approach God on our own terms. Only the
supernatural intercession of our heavenly Father can save a person, rich or
poor (Revelation 3:17).
Sometimes
we see ourselves as ordinary people, not possessing great earthly wealth.
However, if we own a computer or a Cell Phone to read our Emails or access
Facebook or other social sites, we are wealthier than most people on this
planet. We should not allow our “stuff” to take the place of our faith and
trust in God, through Christ, for our eternal life in heaven. God’s heart
desires to help our “camels get through the eye of the needle.” God does
provide a way for us if we never forget that we have a gift from God, and He
wants us to use it to bless those around us and place our faith and trust in
Him.
