1 John 4:16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.
We can know that God is alive
and active in our hearts by the loving deeds we bestow on others. In much the
same manner that we trust and depend on the unceasing Love of God, the people
in our lives need love in their lives as well. The Love of God functions within
the heart and soul of the believer in Christ. John's point in this verse is
that the love of God resides in the Christian as they display love towards
others. We could say that If God lives within someone, His love is there also.
God living inside the heart of
a believer is displayed through His love, clearly shown to the world. The
indwelling of God in us is entwined inseparably to a clear testimony of Christ
Jesus as the Son of God, our Lord, and Savior. Before we can know the love of
God, we must first believe in God's Love. The Christian's appropriate reaction
to who God is and how He loves us is to understand and have faith in Him. It
would be good for us to consider what, if anything, might stop us from trusting
in God's love for us. Paul stated that nothing would separate him from the Love
of Christ Jesus (Romans 8:35-39). As Christians, we should all have that same
faith and trust in God's love in Christ. Charles Spurgeon once said, "To
feel God's love is very precious, but to believe it when you don't feel it, is
the noblest." The believer that enjoys a relationship with God in this
manner will be continuously absorbed in the love of God. It will be their
complete state of being.
No child of God will ever be
any more dedicated or committed than the extent that they demonstrate God's
love to other people. John's objective in this scripture verse is that those
who read this would see God as the Apostles did. Jesus' original 12 disciples
had witnessed God in and through His son Jesus whom they followed. This way,
those who read this down through the ages were experiencing God's love in those
who surrendered their lives to Christ Jesus. Accordingly, as followers and
believers in Christ Jesus, we can enjoy the same truth and fellowship with God
that the twelve apostles did.
Perchance, these words from
John in today's verse that say "God is Love" sums up the quintessence
of God and should be a continuous movement in our walk with Christ Jesus. Let
us reflect on God's amazing love to a dark and dying world so that all might
come to a saving grace in Christ Jesus. Let us also pray that God might place
weary and lost souls in our daily walk so that we might display His love to
those that might not be aware of it.
