Galatians 3:24 So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith.
The Book of Galatians reminds
us repeatedly that the Law does not lead us to righteousness or provide a means
of salvation. However, the Law does one critical thing; it leads us to Christ
Jesus. Because of the Law, we can differentiate between right and wrong. The
Law also makes it possible for us to realize our failures, deficiencies,
disobediences, and points of weakness. More importantly, the Law leads us to
the importance of a Savior in our lives.
The primary purpose of the Law
is to lead us to the place in our lives where we realize that our sanctification and justification come through faith and not works. God created the Law to
convict us of our sin (Romans 7:7-9). Those that reject the finished work of
Christ Jesus on the Cross of Calvary will be forever under the control of the
Law. Our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus redeemed us from the clutches of the Law.
Jesus redeemed us from God's Law by paying the price for our past, present, and
future sins.
If we decline the Law's
warning, it will cost us an eternal consequence, spending eternity in Hell. The
Law, in no ambiguity, warns us against the deception that God might accept us
because of our good works and deeds. Not one of us will ever be able to keep
the Law, which is why we need a Savior.
The Law was a disciplinarian
or teacher for the Children of Israel, but the need for that assistance ended
when Christ Jesus paid our sin debt on the Cross. So now Christ Jesus is our
teacher who holds us in His strong hands and teaches us of God's love, grace,
and mercy. Paul's evaluation indicates that God's Law provided protection and
discipline for Israel until the time was right for Christ to come. The Law was
not the teacher, and it could not save Israel. Instead, it set the course and
provided discipline until all people could be justified.
God's perfect Law was our
guardian to convict us until Christ Jesus went to the Cross and fulfilled the
Law. Then by His death, burial, and resurrection, we are justified by God's
grace through our faith in Him. We are no longer under the heavy clutches of
the Law because we are saved by the sacrifice of Christ Jesus on the Cross, on
our behalf.
