Ephesians 5:15-16 Be very careful, then, how you live —not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
To be careful about how we live is to live vigilantly, always being watchful and cautious can be compared to walking across a stream on rocks, being attentive, and focusing on each stone that we step on so as not to fall into the water. The earth has many spiritual minefields laid down by our enemy Satan. We must be cautious so that we do not step on one of these landmines. These mines include but are not limited to pride, self-centeredness, worldly living, self-indulgence, and a strong desire to follow our paths instead of God's path for us. The wise among us walk with a clear definition of a Christ-Centered life, with a direction gleaned from God's Holy Word through prayer and the leading, guiding, and direction of the Holy Spirit. The un-wise among us drift with the ebbing tides, blown around by every wind of doctrine (Ephesians 4:14).
To live our lives with Godly wisdom is to be intentional with our choices, not letting some outside force influence our daily walk. Unfortunately, sometimes we can be influenced by peer pressure or a direction down life's highways other family members or friends have decided to travel. This peer pressure is especially prevalent in our places of employment. We spend a significant amount of time at our jobs, and it is human nature to want to fit in with the crowd. As a result, Satan tempts us to go along with what the majority sees as normal behavior (1 Peter 5:8-9).
God has a certain amount of time for us to live here on this earth, and He has a specific ministry to carry out while we are here. He wants us to make the most of every opportunity He offers us. Sometimes, we feel that there is something else we would rather be doing when one of these opportunities comes our way. Since our time is limited here in this life, we must take advantage of every opportunity God sends us. Our time is not the only thing that is limited here; the opportunities God sends us are also limited. We must be prepared to grasp these occasions when God presents them to us.
Many out there say: "I'm just too busy with my job and family to do work for the Lord; I'll get more involved when I retire." "Maybe when my children are grown and on their own, I'll have more time to do God's work." God is calling each of us to carry out the work of the ministry that He has assigned to us right now, not wait until it is more convenient for us (Acts 20:24; 2 Timothy 4:7).
When our task here is complete, we will be able to hear what Paul indeed heard after he had finished his race; well done, my good and faithful servant (Matthew 25:21).
