Bible Verse of the Day Thursday October 6th, 2022

Psalm 119:18 Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.

This Prayer is the Prayer that we all, as children of God, should be praying because it confesses our inadequacy and God's Divine sufficiency. The writer of this Psalm wanted to have his spiritual eyes opened so that he might understand the Word of God. The Psalmist recognized, as we should, the need for supernatural help in understanding the scriptures. Holy men from God wrote the Bible, inspired by the Holy Spirit, so it should be read by men and women of God enlightened and indwelled by the God’s Holy Spirit.

Jesus taught that many people would have eyes but not be able to see (Mark 8:18). Jesus and the Psalmist here are talking about spiritual eyes, not physical eyes. It is speaking to having their understanding opened so that they might better comprehend God's true will for their lives. The Disciples of Jesus did not understand His parables until He opened the eyes of their understanding (Luke 24:45).  Remember the two disciples that walked on the road to Emmaus with Jesus, and did not know who he was until He opened their eyes; this again was their spiritual eyes (Luke 24:31).

It is not the Word that needs changing so that we might better understand it; we are veiled and cannot comprehend what God is saying to us without the work of the Holy Spirit. Paul's spiritual eyes opened when his physical eyes were closed on the road outside Damascus. When God closed the physical eyes of Elymas, through Paul, on Cyprus, the spiritual eyes of Sergius Paulus, the Proconsul of Cyprus, opened (Acts 13:8-12).

This verse reminds us that it is not the Holy Word of God that requires any change, as if it were disguised or blurry. As humans, we are the ones that are blind and in need of our spiritual eyes opened so that we can see the love, grace, and mercy of our Lord and Savior, that gave His life on the Cross of Calvary so that we might know eternal life.

It is the desire of some that the Bible might be a bit clearer, but the request of our hearts and prayers should be that God would open our eyes so that we can see the revealed truth of the Gospel of Christ Jesus. It is not some new revelation outside His Holy Word we should seek after, but our prayers should be that God shows us all the amazements of His Word. The Psalmist didn't ask for new eyes so that he might see what God was saying, but that God might open his eyes so he might see all the wonders of God's Word.
