Jeremiah 1:8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you," declares the LORD.
A
world at war scarred the life of the Prophet Jeremiah. The Assyrians dispersed
the Northern Kingdom of Israel throughout the known world. The southern kingdom
of Judah had plummeted into abhorrent apostasy, leading to their country being
captured by the Babylonians and taken captive to Babylon for seventy years.
Daniel, as well as other prophets, prophesied this occurrence, including Jeremiah
(Daniel 9:1-2; Jeremiah 25:11). It was in the backdrop of this tumultuous and
chaotic period of the history of the Children of Israel that God called
Jeremiah to bring His words to His children that had gone astray. Jeremiah had
been chosen by God as His Prophet to Judah even before he was born (Jeremiah
1:5). Jeremiah was very mindful of his inadequacies, lack of ability, and
immaturity. He knew full well that he was not a good public speaker. Just like
Moses, when God called him, Jeremiah attempted to talk God out of this calling,
and just as Moses, God told him that He would be with him and never forsake him
(Jeremiah 1:6-9).
When
God calls one of His followers and believers to a specific task in His service,
He will endow that servant with the means and power necessary, along with an
adequate and appropriate filling of grace to fulfill the mission. Like God
reassured Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:8), He will comfort us when He calls us to an
assignment through the leading and guidance of The Holy Spirit. God has chosen
His followers and believers to carry out a distinctive calling and vocation for
His honor and glory. God has a role for every person in the Body of Christ in
His plan of Salvation. When our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus begins a good work
in the life of one of His children, He will see it through (Philippians 1:6).
Similar
to the case of the Prophet Jeremiah, the magnitude and immensity of our calling
might seem somewhat overawing and daunting to the point that we would pray that
someone else might carry on in our place. However, we should never give up no
matter how great the task might seem or how inadequate we might feel because
God has promised He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5;
Deuteronomy 31:6, Joshua 1:5).
Some get the mistaken idea that God’s calling on our lives depends on our capabilities, aptitudes, proficiency, or a certain level of educational degree. Sometimes He might use one of those qualities, but God does not require us to equip ourselves for a special mission He has for us. The Prophet Jeremiah fulfilled his calling of God in a world overwrought with wars and pestilence. Unfortunately, today's world has wars and rumors of wars and evil abounding in every corner of the planet. However, there is not a single thing that humanity can do to us that might cause us to lose God’s protective canopy. Our text verse reminds us that we have nothing to fear from the world and its ways because God is always with us and consistently delivers us from the evil that encircles us.
