1 John 4:9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.
The
Apostle John is saying that this is the proof positive of God’s autonomous and
absolute love. The fact that He sent His Son into the world to atone for all
sins and all sinners by His blood sacrifice on the Cross of Calvary is an
unambiguous confirmation of a love that could only come from God. The Father’s
love for the Son has existed through all eternity and that love was manifested
by the substitutionary work of Christ Jesus, on our behalf, on the Cross of
Calvary. At Calvary God’s love was demonstrated in the fact that even though we
are all sinners Christ Jesus died not for some, but for all people (Romans
5:8).
The
utmost expression of the love of God towards a world that was living under a
curse of sin was revealed when God sent His Son into the world to die a
horrible, shameful and painful death on an “Old Rugged Cross.” The death of
Christ Jesus on the Cross paid a sin debt that was on us, that we could never
pay. We could never live a perfect life according to God’s Law, and the
breaking of one of His laws is the breaking of them all (James 2:10). Since we
could never satisfy the penalty of sin Jesus paid that price for us so that all
that put their faith and trust in Him will never perish but have eternal life
(John 3:16).
We
can never repay the debt that should have been ours but there is something we
can do. We can live a life that would bring honor and glory to the Name above
all other names, Christ Jesus. We will never hit the bull’s eye in this life
but as long as our hearts are surrendered to Christ and our lives are deeply
committed to following God’s wishes and desires, we will experience the power
of the leading, guiding, and direction of The Holy Spirit.
The
Love that God has for us empowers us, through the indwelling of the Holy
Spirit, to love others. To put the necessities and essentials of others ahead
of our own needs and to place our love and service to God as our number one
priority. When we do surrender our self-importance and gratification for the
benefit of others we are signifying and exhibiting that the love of God does
dwell within us.
The
Love of God is completely revealed upon the Cross of Calvary, the world does
not need any further confirmation or testimony. There is no way that humanity
can ever comprehend or appreciate the profundity or the depth of the love of
God that sent His Son to the Cross, to redeem all that places their faith and
trust in Christ Jesus. It was His love and not anything that we could or ever
will do that our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus not only willingly, but joyfully
went to the Cross of Calvary (Hebrews 12:2).
He
did this so that every fallen sinner, of which we all are a part of, would be
avowed righteous before a Holy God. Eternal damnation is what we all deserve,
eternal life is the gift we received of God, through the sacrifice of Christ
Jesus on the Cross of Calvary.
