Psalm 3:1-3 LORD, how many are my foes! How many rise up against me! Many are saying of me, "God will not deliver him." But you, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
This
scripture verse in Psalm 3 is a cry from David to God when his Son Absalom rose
in revolt against his father, the King of Israel, and David and his closest followers
had to flee Jerusalem into the wilderness (2 Samuel 15). Although the forces of
power within the realm of his Son Absalom were much stronger than the military
forces of David, and he had to flee, King David never lost his faith and trust
in God. On the contrary, David trusted that God was his shield and glory, and
he knew that God would lift him above this great tribulation.
Our
Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus suffered the same rejection from His people;
thousands rose against Him and called for His crucifixion (Luke 23:21).
Multitudes of sins, along with the followers and friends of death and hell,
both spiritual and human, attacked the Son of the living God. What a marvelous
blessing and glorious hope we have because Christ Jesus overpowered and subdued
the prince of this world, Satan (2 Corinthians 4:4). Jesus has claimed victory
over the evil powers that are out to distract, disrupt, and blind us to the
truth of the Word of God.
Although
Satan is still running around this world, seeking to blind our eyes to God’s
truth (Job 2:2), we have the power to escape from his evil attacks within us.
That power, the most powerful force in the known universe, is the Holy Spirit
of God. Satan lost the battle for the human soul when Jesus sacrificed Himself
on the Cross of Calvary. Death does not affect our eternal souls because of the
victory won by Jesus on the Cross; we are assured eternal life through Christ
Jesus.
Sometimes,
people may rise against us, possibly our friends and loved ones. Satan will use
other people to blind our spiritual eyes to the truth that we have in God’s
Holy Word. However, we can follow the example of King David and not only
believe that God is our protector, and He will lead us by still and peaceful
waters but acknowledge that to ourselves and those around us. In David’s time
of great anguish, he found comfort, deliverance, and peace in God, and in Him
found the shield to fend off the evil darts of Satan that he aimed at the
tender recesses of his heart and soul. Satan will attack us with a twofold
strategy. First, he will attack our hearts and souls to soften us up and create
turmoil, disorder, and chaos so that we will look to the world for support and
comfort. Then he will aim for our heads, attempting to sow seeds of doubt and
get us to turn away from God and the truth of His Word. Satan has no weapons
that can use to defeat or even attack the truth of God’s Word; his only chance
is to cause doubt in our hearts and minds.
God
was David’s “shield and glory,” and for all that place their faith and trust in
Christ, Jesus God will be our “shield and glory.”
