Romans 6:20 When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness.
In
the sensual world bound up by a sinful nature, demoralized by the wiles of
Satan, and destined for death and hell, the only freedom comes from the
knowledge of the truth of God's Word. In this verse of scripture, Paul teaches
all that read this that being in servitude to Christ Jesus is where you will
find freedom. The natural world would consider being in subjection as freedom a
foolish idea. However, God uses what the world believes foolishness to disgrace
the supposable wise of the world (1 Corinthians 1:27). This verse attacks the
issue from the reverse thesis, being enslaved by sin frees people from any
control of God and His righteousness. Being free from the power of God is just
where Satan wants all people to be. Satan does not have to utilize a lot of
workforce on those subjugated and dominated by his evil power. However, being
free from the power and control of the Holy Spirit of God is a dangerous place
to be. There is no median in the narrow path that leads to life; we are free
from God's control or from sin to walk by God's power.
Paul's
analysis here would be somewhat humorous if it were not so eternally
devastating. At a time when we were free from God's righteousness, we were
under Satan's control, and the remuneration of sin was nothing but death
(Romans 6:23 a ). It is horrendous and horrifying to find that we are free from
God's control and steeped in sin. This lost condition is hopeless without God
in control because it allows people to fall to the evil powers of darkness,
eternally separated from God.
However,
there is some good news amid all this evil, horror, and hopelessness: God has
offered a free gift of Salvation for any that accept Him as their Lord and
Savior (Romans 6:23 b). Christ Jesus went to the Cross so that everyone could
know Salvation. Jesus not only died on the Cross of Calvary to atone for all
sin (John 3:16), but he went to the Cross not only to free all from the power
of sin but to break the chains and bonds that Satan uses to hold us captive.
The most exciting part of this is there is only one requirement to call on the
name of the Lord to be saved (Romans 10:13).
If
you are reading this and saved by God's grace, praise the Lord; if not, do not
put this off another day; run to Jesus right now and tell Him you want to
become a Child of God. He will not turn anyone away. If you are reading this
and are saved but know someone that is not, go to them and help them come to
the saving grace of Christ Jesus. The greatest thing any human being can do for
another human is to introduce them to our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus.
