Bible Verse of the Day Sunday January 29th, 2023

1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Many times, people take a particular bible verse out of its Biblical context or misrepresent the text, falsifying or misleading the writer's intent. This false representation of God's Word can and does create uncertainty and ambiguity in unbelievers and saved alike. This verse of scripture from Paul's letter to Timothy is a prime example because it has been misquoted and distorted, possibly more than any other verse in the Bible. The false representation of this verse is that money is the root of all evil. There have been books and songs written on this false concept for as long as people have laid pen to paper, possibly even reed pens to papyrus.

First of all, it is not money that is evil or even the root of evil; it is the love of that money in which the problem lies. Wealth and capital in itself can be used for good as well as evil. Some have the misconception that this applies to those with massive fortunes only. The size of one's financial holdings has nothing to do with the depth of their love of money, or lack thereof. This can be explained by looking at verse 9 in this chapter of 1 Timothy.

1 Timothy 6:9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.

Appreciably the yearning and craving for fame and fortune are much more devastating than money itself. This desire to get rich is not reserved for the less fortunate only; most wealthy people can never seem to have enough (Ecclesiastes 5:10). The Word of God warns against the love of money in this verse as well as in other places (Hebrews 13:5; Matthew 6:24; 2 Timothy 3:2), only to name a few. We should be cautious and heed the warnings in the Bible concerning falling into Satan's trap of the love of money. Again, it is not the money that is the problem; sometimes, God will bless someone with a vast fortune. Satan's snare that he sets out is for the love of that money and focusing one's life on the pursuit of earthly wealth, to the exclusion of our closeness and walk with our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus.

As followers and believers in Christ Jesus, we are assured and can be confident that God will provide for all of our needs. We must be on guard that our money remains our servant, not our master. There is one other truth that we must always remember: we came into this world with no earthly riches, and we will leave it the same. However, the riches in Christ Jesus that we store up in heaven will stay with us for eternity (Matthew 6:19-21).
