John 10:34 Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your Law, ’I have said you are "gods"’?
The discourse in the tenth chapter of the Gospel of John finds
Jesus in Solomon's Colonnade at the Temple. The Jewish people surrounding Him
ask Him to tell them now in plain language whether or not He was the promised,
long-awaited Messiah that would take away the world's sins. This dissertation
from Christ Jesus stated that He was the "Good Shepard" that had come
to earth, left His deity in heaven, and came to lay down His life so that all
who believe in Him might have eternal life. This revelation had two different
effects that day, one that must have thrilled the hearts and souls of those
that thought He was the Savior of the World, God in the flesh, and the others
that wanted to stone Him for committing blasphemy. But, on the other hand, his
opponents accused Him of claiming He was God even though He was a mere human
being.
Our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus, responded to those accusing
Him of blasphemy by using scripture from the writings of their Prophets, which
had all told of the coming of the promised Messiah. He pointed them to Psalm
82:6, stating that He had called them gods. In some incidences in the Old
Testament, the Hebrew word for "god" is
Christ Jesus was far more than a human being called to be a judge of the Nation of Israel; He was God in the flesh. He was the promised Messiah that had first been promised in the Garden of Eden and prophesied by God's appointment throughout the Jewish people's history up to that point. Using the verses from scripture that He did, He was unmistakably displaying a difference between the dishonest and perverted leaders of the Nation of Israel during the dispensation of the Law and Himself, who had come to earth to set up the New dispensation of Grace. The greatest act of love accomplished that humankind had ever known up to that point or which the world will ever know. Jesus did this by voluntarily going to the Cross and joyfully taking on the shame, humiliation, and pain of the cruelest execution ever devised by mortals (Hebrews 12:2).
Even today, many misguided
humans have misunderstood and misused the scripture from Psalm 82 to feed their
prideful lust for fame and fortune. This act is most assuredly blasphemy, where
some humans fall for the same lies and manipulations Satan spoke to Adam and
Eve in the Garden when He told them they would be like God (Genesis 3:5).
Christ Jesus is, without a
doubt, one with the Father, and His Word, the Bible, is the truth, and all of
His promises in scripture are as sure as the sun's rising and setting until the
true Son returns to this earth. Christ Jesus came to this earth to suffer and
die on an "Old Rugged Cross" so that all that accept His as their
personal Lord and Savior will never die but have eternal life.
