Proverbs 3:27-28 Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, "Come back tomorrow and I’ll give it to you" — when you already have it with you.
Solomon is
teaching us here that when it is in our power to help someone in need, we
should never turn our backs on that person. We cannot help everyone that we
meet; no one has the means to supply every need, trying to accomplish this will
overwhelm a person in no time at all. However, the Lord does put people in our
paths that He wants us to lend a helping hand to help meet their needs. In
helping those that God puts in our paths, it will dissipate a sense of
hopelessness in that person and reinforce and bolster their faith in Christ
Jesus. In doing this, we can also continue to reflect the Light of Christ Jesus
to a "lost" and dying world. When we do face a situation that God has
placed someone in need in our lives, it will expose our view of our resources,
time, and money. This is simply because it will sometimes happen in a time that
we view as inconvenient, but God is in these inconvenient moments when we are
faced with extending a helping hand.
When we follow
our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus's directions from His Holy Word, we will be
pleasantly surprised to find Jesus in the person that we are helping. When God
gives us the opportunity to help someone around us in need, let us not put it
off until tomorrow. We should never refuse kindness when it is in our power and
ability to extend a helping hand. If we have the means and out neighbor has a
need, we should help them today and not put it off until tomorrow, possibly
tomorrow might not come for us or our neighbor.
There is an old
parable that tells a story about a man who had a dream one night. In the dream,
he first went to hell. In hell, he discovered that everyone lived with
tremendous agony. All the people there held bread and drink in their hands.
But, in hell, no one could bend their arms and get the food or drink into their
mouths to quench their thirst and their hunger. This was their great burden.
Then the same man went to heaven. There everyone lived with the same exact
issue. But they had overcome. Rather than only trying to feed themselves
unsuccessfully, they had discovered that they could easily and wonderfully feed
each other. In caring for one another, they had found heaven for others and for
themselves. (The source of this Parable is unknown).
