Psalms 2:11 Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling.
The
gospel is not about the ones that preach. It does not correlate to the
messenger's exceptional qualifications, abilities, or articulateness. It
doesn't matter how many followers a person may draw; gaining attention to witty
speeches does not win the lost souls to Christ Jesus. The unique message of
Jesus kept Paul from self-endorsement. He was not interested in his
accomplishments but in what Jesus attained through his missionary journeys. He
never manipulated people for his good works. He did not try to gather a
"fan club" on his behalf.
The
fundamental and foundational issue in every ministry is Christ Jesus. The
message should not surround us but be in line with Him. He is "the
Lord." The Christian news is not bland moralism. The function of any
ministry should focus on something other than gaining followers; it should be
centered around helping people understand who Jesus is and what his ministry is
in the world. "Jesus" is what he is known by in the world, and
"Lord" is His divine title. Serve the Lord with reverence, with a
sense of His majesty and glory, as we live our lives to serve Him and follow
his directive to spread the gospel's good news to the ends of the earth (Acts
1:8).
This
Psalm is one of the psalms sometimes known as a remembrance Psalm. Remembering
how the people of God sometimes fell away from His teachings and remembering
how God responded at that time. Through recognizing these things, faith in God
continues from generation to generation. We must not take for granted his
holiness and might. But the incredible reality of God's grace is this: God, who
thundered at Mount Sinai and spoke into existence the universe with its
marvelous expanse, loves us and longs for us to draw near and find refuge in
him. We can rejoice in reverent awe and praise God with holy fear. We can rest
assured because our trust is not in what is human, what is temporary, and what
is vulnerable, our faith and trust in Jesus, the Lord of Lords and The King of
all Kings.
We
should never take his holiness and might for granted. But the astonishing
reality of God's grace is this: God, who spoke with great power at Mount Sinai
and spoke the universe into existence with its awe-inspiring vastness, loves
you and I and longs for us to draw near Him and rest in his love, grace, and
mercy. We can delight in reverent awe and praise Him with holy fear. We can
rest secure because our trust is not in something temporary or defenseless but
in the creator of all in heaven and all on earth. The substance of our message
is Christ Jesus, the Lord. He is the world's Light; without Him, Christianity
is mere religion.
