Hebrews 11:31 By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.
God's complete account of the prostitute Rahab can be found
in the Book of Josuha Chapter 2:1-21. She was a pagan gentile who had heard of
the miracle of Crossing the Red Sea. Josuha had sent spies out ahead of the
Army of God to gather critical information at Jericho before they invaded the
city. Rahab provided the spies with food and shelter during their undercover
operation, and in exchange, God spared her life.
Today, if we were choosing people to work with us in a
mission by which God sent us out, a prostitute would most likely not be among
our first choice of people to work with our missionary team. In the case of the
spies sent out by Josuha, God was not looking at what we were looking at; he
was looking deeper into the spirit and soul of the one who was willing to
serve.
Some people often come up with excuses as to why they can't
serve God. We don't have the time to put into the mission God is calling us to.
Many times, we hear the excuse that "I am just not qualified to serve in
the role that God is calling me to". Serving God has nothing to do with any
training we may or may not have. God is looking for those who are willing to
serve Him. He is looking for Christians willing to step out of their comfort
zone, no matter their background or past. Instead of giving God excuses, we
should be giving Him our service! Are you willing to serve God, or are you just
giving excuses?
Rahab was a woman in a culture where the men in their lives
controlled women. Moreover, she was a Canaanite Gentile, coupled with the fact
that she was a practicing prostitute. If we ran into this situation, there is a
great possibility we would not even entertain the thought of including her in
our mission project. However, God does not look at the outside information of a
person; He sees much deeper than we, as frail humans, can see.
In the New Testament, in the Gospel of Matthew, we will
find her name in the genealogy of our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus. She
married Salmon and became the mother of Boaz, who married Ruth, David's
great-grandfather. Jesus was in the lineage of David (Ruth 4:21; Matthew
1:5–6). Rahab was physically related to both David and Jesus.
Throughout this world, there are Christians who are in
desperate need of encouragement and strength, which only the Word of God can
provide. We should focus on helping Christians find encouragement, develop
stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians accept Jesus Christ as
Savior. God is seeking people who are willing to surrender themselves to His
service. He is looking for willing and enthusiastic Christians to surrender
themselves to His will for our lives. He wants us to step out of our comfort
zone, regardless of background or past. Instead of giving God excuses, we
should be giving Him our service!
