1 Timothy 6:7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.
The Bible contains many weighty and insightful statements;
however, this scripture verse is exceptional! In less than twenty words, this
scripture verse completely readjusts our awareness of what is essential in
every life. The power of this verse comes from its complete, unadulterated
truth! Not a single person can argue against this statement. Furthermore, our
mind cannot argue this truth, possibly its most helpful attribute!
We sometimes face moments of want and desire. Our brain
tells us we need more resources to buy everything we need. Of course, sometimes
we purchase the unaffordable anyway, with even more significant consequences.
The temptation we encounter for more stuff will be a constant drive as long as we
are in these earthly bodies. We are flooded with advertisements every day of
our lives for things we think we cannot live without. Moreover, thanks to the
overnight deliveries from online merchandise sites, getting these things is
much easier than in the days before the internet.
The question becomes what we must defend ourselves from these
constant attacks. The answer is simple: God’s Holy Word, specifically,
recalling this verse in our moments of deep desire, will bring us exceptional
peace and comfort. After all, even if we obtain that new weed-eater or the
latest computer or tablet on the market, it will not last forever. Furthermore,
this verse helps us feel good about saying no to ourselves. We will suddenly
realize that we are not genuinely missing out on anything!
A child comes into this world not only without a penny to their
name but with no pockets to put money into, even if they had it. Just as surely
as we take nothing with us when we exit this life, all the gold and silver that
is so important in this life will mean nothing in eternity. Maintaining a
contented heart in this life depends on our vision of material goods and
looking at our things from an eternal perspective. There is one thing we will
never witness in this life: a moving trailer hooked up to a hearse. Everything
we hold up in esteem and highly value will belong to someone else when we
breathe our last breath.
Although we cannot carry anything with us when we exit this
life, we can reserve eternal blessings and rewards by how we live our lives. If
we focus on blessing those around us and being generous with the things God has
blessed us with, there will be a reward for that in our lives to
come.
