Proverbs 30:5 “Every word of God is
flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
I watched a movie years ago
that was a battle set back sometime in the first century. There were no guns,
and the opposing armies fought the battle with swords, bows, and arrows. As
they prepared for battle, each of the soldiers put on armor. They had their
helmets and chest plates, swords on their sides, and bows in their hands. But
they also had a shield. As they marched toward the other group, they were
systematically in their final preparations and ensured they had an arrow ready
to shoot. They had their swords to draw out quickly when needed. But the last
words as they approached the line for battle were, "Put up your
shield."
Many times, in our lives, it
feels like we are going into battle. The world around us wants to destroy us,
and they want nothing more than for Christians to no longer exist. The easy
solution is to destroy us, putting us in the minority and silencing our voices.
But instead, we should keep in mind the words of Proverbs 30:5.
We must shield ourselves in
the pure Word of God. Just as a diver's suit shields them from the atmosphere
of the seas, allowing them to move in it without being wet or lacking oxygen,
so will the Word shield us from the world's dirt as we walk through it and
allow us to breathe Heaven's atmosphere. It will keep us from falling in battle
as it increases our trust in Him and makes the ways of this world as desirable
as smog. It will also help keep us faithful to God's Word and keep us from
adding to or taking away from it by viewing things out of context.
We have no reason to fear the
battles of this world because we have God as our shield. Instead of fear, our
response should be to put up our shield. God made us dependent on Him and did
not mean for us to go it alone; we are God's creation. Is the pot independent
of the Potter? We need God, who has revealed Himself and His workings among
humanity. God has given us the Bible, and we can find the solution to every
situation. It gives wisdom to all humankind regardless of poverty or wealth. It
guides all people, whether in the first century or the twenty-first century.
