Mattthew 15:8 These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
This verse highlights the discrepancy between outward
religious observance and inward devotion. It criticizes individuals who profess
faith verbally but whose hearts turn away from God. It's a caution for
Christians to ensure their faith isn't merely lip service but heartfelt
devotion. Many people have a semblance of piety but turn their back on the
transformative power of faith.
Approximately a half-century ago, the Coca-Cola company began transitioning its slogan to "It's the real thing." The company has tenuously held on to that slogan because they believe that even though there are many pretenders, nothing will replace the authentic taste of Coca-Cola. There is indeed nothing better than something genuine. There are many imposters of almost every kind that we encounter. You can find jewelry that looks like gold, but it is fake. Find your favorite tech gadget and some fake ones will look very similar. While those items may look like the original, they are not the real thing.
The challenge is that so many times, it can be difficult to distinguish genuine items from fake ones. For example, we may need help differentiating between genuine and counterfeit items. However, the expert in that field can distinguish between the real thing and the counterfeit. You and I may grapple to recognize a false Christian in our day but make no mistake: God knows because he is the ultimate expert. He knows a genuine Christian inside and out. God knows their hearts and isn't looking at the outside like we are because He sees what's inside.
So, the question becomes, do we have the real thing, or are
we just another fake? Are we Christian only in our actions and deeds, or have
we truly accepted Christ Jesus and given our hearts to God? We may fool those
around us, but God knows the truth. He knows whether we truly know Him or are
just another fake Christian.
This was true of the religious leaders Jesus confronted and
shared with them the passage from Isaiah 29:13 “These
people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human
rules they have been taught.”
Furthermore, this can be true of many "armchair'
Christians today who appear to draw near to God, all the while having their
heart far from Him. It is easy to want and be impressed by the image of being
near God without really doing it with one's heart.
