Job 16:3 Will your long-winded speeches never end? What ails you that you keep on arguing?
Many people in this world will
share their opinions. Many business leaders, celebrities, and others quickly
share their views. They believe they know what is best for our family and us.
They want to encourage us to live their way, do their things, or change our
minds about our beliefs.
Some people in many churches
prefer to share their own opinions rather than what God’s word says. Far too
many churches are quick to share a popular opinion rather than the truth of God
anymore. But what happens when it isn’t a leader, but it is a friend? Job
certainly knew what that was like. He had sought out his friends to share their
opinions with him. In the end, it led to Job saying they were miserable
comforters. Their advice wasn’t good, and their views were unfounded and uncomfortable.
In other words, Job’s friends didn’t cut it! They weren’t up to the challenge.
There is nothing wrong with
seeking good advice. Many friends can provide comfort and guidance in times of
need to help, but they are not a substitute for God. We can try to make sense
of everything happening around us, but true comfort and direction come from
God! We may have relied on our friends but find ourselves like Job. We find
ourselves in a situation where our friends don’t cut it. They simply aren’t
giving good advice or helping comfort us. Or perhaps they don’t know what to
say. Go to God! He’s the one that is closer than a brother. He cares for us,
loves us, and wants to help us.
Scripture teaches us that our
hearts deceive us. We find it simpler to discern the reasonableness and
importance of a command when we must claim its benefit rather than when we must
do its duty. In other words, if it is in our best interest, we respond, if not,
we forget about it. We should say and do all we can to strengthen people,
suggesting proper things to encourage their confidence in God and support their
sinking spirits.
